Lancers win home opener

Elba/Byron-Bergen used a balanced offensive attack to score twice in each half and their defense held Pembroke off the scoreboard until late in the fourth quarter in a 27-7 football victory.
On the first possession of the game, the Lancers scored on a fourth-down, 12-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Garrett Chapell to Kyle Dougherty.
Late in the second quarter it was Dougherty again – this time on a 56-yard connection. Brandon Naylor’s extra point made it 13-0 Lancers at halftime.
With four minutes remaining in the third quarter, a fourth down apparent touchdown pass was called back on a penalty, but Chapell found Austin Yockel in the back of the end zone on the second attempt for a 20-0 advantage.
Yockel picked off his second interception of the day on the Dragons next offensive possession and returned it 57 yards to the Pembroke 17 yard line. On the next play, Naylor took the ball 17 yards on the ground for the touchdown and a 27-0 lead.
Chapell finished the contest 6-of-1 for 172 yards passing a three touchdowns; Dougherty had four receptions for 135 yards while Naylor led with 60 yards rushing on 17 carries. On defense, Steele Truax led with seven tackles and two forced fumbles while Mike Shanley had two tackles, an interception and forced fumble for the 1-1 Lancers.
