Requa, Rutland pace Eagles

by Warren Kozireski

Eighth-grader Taylor ReQua scored almost halfway through the first half and sophomore Maya Rutland added an insurance tally late in the first to lead Kendall shutout Holley 2-0 in girls soccer.
ReQua found the right side of the net from about 16 yards out in the 19th minute to stake the Eagles to a 1-0 lead.
Holley threatened to tie the game in the 25th minute executing a triangle passing play with Luca Fahmer feeding Lexi Reyngoudt who found Nicole Mauro, but her attempt was stopped by Kendall goalkeeper Kari Hurlbutt.
Late in the first half, the Eagles converted off a corner kick. Marisa Hanlon found a wide-open Rutland for the goal at 37:17.
The Hawks had two more scoring opportunities in the second half. In the 43rd minute, Mauro had her shot deflect to the top of the box before Eagles keeper Hurlbutt preserved the shutout with a diving stop of Monica Merlau’s rebound attempt.
In the 71st minute Mauro pushed her attempt over the crossbar.
The Eagles’ Hurlbutt made five saves in registering her second shutout of the season and Kendall’s fourth over the first five games this season. They had allowed just one goal in over 400 minutes/five games.
