Schreiner earns first shutout
Senior goalkeeper Morgan Schreiner made eight saves and registered the first varsity shutout of her career as host Spencerport and Rush-Henrietta played 100 minutes of scoreless girls soccer.
Each team had just one legitimate scoring chance in the first half with Schreiner coming out 25 yards to kick away a potential Royal Comets break in the 26th minute.
Two minutes later, Ranger midfielder Amber Kegler pressured in the offensive zone to create a turnover, but her shot from 18 yards out went wide right.
Spencerport controlled play through much of the second half. Katie Chamberlain missed the far post from just inside the left side of the box in the 49th minute. Six minutes later, Sierra Beaty found Audriana Benedetto, whose cross to Olivia Coccitto was stopped by the R-H keeper.
“At times we won the midfield battle, but we didn’t have very many dangerous chances even when we were pressing in the final fifteen minutes,” said Spencerport head coach Jamie Schneider.
In the 66th minute, Karen Wetherell sent a through-pass to Chamberlain behind the defense, but her shot was deflected wide of the net. On the ensuing corner kick, Chamberlain fed a pass to Bianca Marascio, who shot high.
The best chance came with two minutes remaining in regulation as Chamberlain’s shot from 30 yards out bounced off the hands of the R-H keeper and glanced off the outside of the right post.
The shutout was the Rangers’ second of the season; their record is now 2-3-2.
