Cadets’ rally falls short
Hilton rallied after a first game loss to win game two and held a 24-20 advantage in game four before falling 30-32 to Gates-Chili in girls volleyball.
Gates-Chili led the entire way in the first game in a 25-18 win, but the Cadets rallied in game two.
Dayle Taber had four kills while Alyse Wenzel had a key block for a point when the game was tied 18-18 to spur Hilton’s late rally. Melissa Rudy and Wenzel registered kills over the final four points in a 25-19 Hilton win to even the match 1-1.
Game three featured six lead changes, but the Spartans took advantage of four service errors and used their own service game to break a 16-16 tie with three aces over a four point span in their 25-20 victory.
The Cadets led through much of the fourth game and built a 14-9 lead on the strength of Taber’s two kills and an ace, two Rudy kills and a kill from Wenzel.
With Hilton one point away from forcing a fifth and deciding game with a 24-20 lead, Gates-Chili mounted a comeback with four consecutive points to tie the contest at 24-24. The teams then traded points over the next six for a 30-30 tie before the Spartans ended it with two consecutive points and a 32-30 win.
“We’re a good team, but the whole season has just been a roller coaster,” said Hilton head coach Kevin Hunt.
Wenzel led Hilton with 12 kills and added three blocks. Taber had 11 kills with seven digs, Rudy 11 kills and five digs, Marielle Buss led the defensive effort with 16 digs and Hannah DiLorenzo handed out 30 assists for the 7-7 Cadets.
