Blackburn, Underwood split Hawks shutout

Senior Nicole Blackburn and junior Jade Underwood combined for nine saves to preserve Holley’s 0-0 tie with Attica for the Hawks girls soccer senior night. It marked the second scoreless tie with Attica this season.

After a scoreless first half, the Hawks found some rhythm offensively in the second. Heather Winkley passed to Samantha Barniak whose shot was stopped on a diving save by the Attica goalkeeper in the 53rd minute.

Four minutes later leading scorer Nicole Mauro put her shot from 25 yards out just over the crossbar.

Attica had their best scoring chance of regulation during the 60th minute off a corner kick and shot by Lacy Leto that Underwood had to make a diving save on.

In the first overtime session, Holley sophomore Riley Sanger burst down the right wing and took a sharp angle shot that was stopped.

Then, with just 35 seconds remaining in the final overtime, Underwood again was called on as she charged out of her net and blocked a Blue Devils opportunity. The ensuing rebound shot went wide.

Holley improved their record to 7-3-5 and was seeded seventh for the upcoming Section V playoffs, though they had aspirations of catching sixth seed Bloomfield with one game remaining.

Ten seniors played their final regular season home game: Emily Skehan, Mauro, Emily Pearson, Monica Merlau, Morgan Zona, Lexi Reyngoudt, Claudia Passarell, Emily Kordovich, Sarah Wharram and Blackburn.
