Five Hilton seniors sign to play collegiate athletics
A crowd gathered in the gymnasium at Hilton High School to watch five student athletes sign letters of intent to play on collegiate sports teams.
Anthony and Vincent DePrez will both wrestle for the Divison I Binghamton University Bearcats. The brothers have been wrestling since third grade and both competed at the state level last year. “We liked the coaches; the guys on the team were nice and we felt like we’d fit in at Binghamtom,” said Vincent.
Mackenzie Dude signed to play Division II lacrosse at Roberts Wesleyan College. She said she selected Roberts for its academics and plans to study forensic science. Mackenzie, who has played lacrosse for six years, led her team to win the division both last year and two years ago, which she said was the highlight of her career.
Amy Hasenaur will be playing basketball for the Division I Holy Cross Crusaders. “Holy Cross has everything about a college that I value,” said Amy. She will study math and education. Amy has been playing basketball since sixth grade and said the highlight of her Hilton career was winning sectionals as a freshman.
Alyse Wenzel will be heading to the University of Hartford where she will be playing volleyball for the Division I Hawks. “When I toured Hartford, I like everything I saw,” she said. “I met the team and everyone was nice.” Alyse will be majoring in psychology.
“We get more students athletes signing on to play in college every year,” said Mike Giruzzi, Hilton athletic director. “That’s a testament to our athletes being good students as well as athletes.”
