Bees comeback falls short
Trailing by as many as 16 points in the third quarter, Byron-Bergen went on a 13-3 run to pull within four points and later within three, but fell short in a 49-42 boy’s basketball loss to visiting Alexander.
The Bees had an early lead on field goals from junior Nick Magin and senior Dajuandrick Gardner before the Trojans outscored the Bees 22-4 extending to late in the second quarter to lead 24-8.
Byron-Bergen called timeout two minutes into the second half down by 14 points and the team exploded with eight unanswered points with senior guard Kyle Dougherty lobbing passes over the defense three times to Gardner for easy lay-ups and Magin adding a put-back and trey to pull the Bees within four points with 40 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Trailing by nine points midway through the fourth, Steele Truax hit a bank shot, Dougherty a jumper and Gardner another lay-up on consecutive trips to cut the Trojans lead to three points.
But the offense went dry and failed to score a single point over the final 2:35 of the contest to fall short.
Gardner had a double-double with a team-high 15 points and 14 rebounds including seven on the offensive boards. Magin had nine points, Truax had nine points with three assists and Dougherty added eight points with a team-high four assists.
The Bees have a road trip to Attica and host Pembroke (12/20) prior to the holiday break.
