Byron-Bergen’s girls basketball team jumped out to an 8-0 lead on baskets by Abbie Kelley (2), Abbie Noeth and Lindsay Lovette and never trailed as they defeated host Kendall 63-36.
The Bees defense limited Kendall to just five points on offense in the first and third quarters while tallying 33 points of their own over the same period.
Kelley scored seven of her team-high 17 points in the second quarter and Kristen Hohn added six more as the Bees led 32-17 at the half. The junior, in her third year as a varsity player, finished the game just 14 points from 300 scored this season, putting her among the top-20 in Section V.
In a sloppy third quarter, Byron-Bergen managed to score 16 points as Kristin Hohn and Shawna Adams knocked down three-pointers, Christine Stevens a jumper, Noeth a put-back and Kelley a pair of free throws and a put-back to stake the Bees to a 46-22 lead.
Both benches emptied for the fourth quarter with the Bees’ Adams sinking the final three field goals of the contest after Stevens was four-of-four from the line. Kendall’s Tania Arellano scored five of her team-high 14 points over the final eight minutes.
In addition to Kelley, Adams finished with 13 points and Hohn seven while Lovette, Noeth and Stevens each had six points for the Bees. Arellano led the Eagles with 14 points with Shelby Reis scoring eight and Toni ReQua adding six.
The Bees improved to 15-2 with two games remaining in the regular season. They were tied with Avon in the race for top seed in Class C1 for the upcoming sectional playoffs.
Kendall fell to 5-11 and were tied with Red Jacket as the ninth seed in Class C2 with also two games remaining.
