Blue Devils can’t hold on to lead against Spartans
Brockport opened the second half with a 12-2 run to take an eight-point lead before netting just six points over the final three-plus minutes in a 74-68 boys basketball loss to Greece Olympia.
The Blue Devils fell behind 6-0 before fighting back on a trey from Jake Burgio, an old-fashioned three-point play from Josh Michaels and a runner by Donald Cook. Olympia then went on a 10-2 run to go up by eight, but Brockport again battled back to briefly take the lead early in the second quarter.
A three-pointer by Taylor Haug off the bench at the end of the first half got the Blue Devils to within two points and gave them momentum in the second.
Burgio converted an alley-oop, Michels hit a lay-up, Tom Reynolds converted on a drive and Cook hit a pair of treys to put Brockport up 46-38, but the offense stalled a bit for the rest of the third quarter except a Michels three-pointer at the quarter buzzer.
The Spartans retook the lead with 3:22 left and extended that to six points in the final minute before missed free throws allowed the Blue Devils back in it.
A runner by Burgio with 25 seconds left closed the gap to four and, after an Olympia field goal, Reynolds hit a three-pointer to pull the Blue Devils to within three with seven seconds remaining. But the Spartans were three-of-four from the line from then on to seal the victory.
Burgio led Brockport with 26 points and eight rebounds, Cook scored 17 points, Reynolds had ten and Michels added seven.
With one game remaining in the regular season, 5-12 Brockport could be anywhere from a 12 to a 16 seed for the Section V tournament, which begins February 17.
