Be prepared: Boating season is coming
Are you looking forward to getting back out on the water?
There is an active group of boaters who are already preparing for the 2014 boating season. They are the Members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary is a volunteer organization that supports the Coast Guard. Members are trained in areas that promote boating safety. There are also many opportunities that are not directed toward boating, like the Auxiliary Chef program.
Auxiliarists teach boating safety courses leading to the certificate required by all who operate jet skis, as well as the new NYS law for operators of power boats from age 10 to 18. It is also informative for all boaters.
In addition, Auxiliarists give free Vessel Safety Checks and distribute literature that promotes boating safety to stores with marine equipment, libraries, town offices and similar sites.
Another area of Coast Guard support is Operations – both on the water and in the air. Trained Auxiliarists provide safety patrols and can be utilized when boaters have difficulty on the water.
Anyone who is looking for a volunteer opportunity can consider the Coast Guard Auxiliary. There are flotillas (local groups) in the Rochester and Buffalo areas. Information can be obtained atwww.cgaux.org. Contact Bonnie at 585-964-2551 orDivision4HR@rochester.rr.com with questions and/or for helping finding a flotilla near you.
