Cadets’ late rally falls short

Hilton’s girls lacrosse team scored seven of the final eight goals of the contest, but fell to visiting Pittsford 15-11.

After the Panthers took a 1-0 lead, Hilton sophomore Rachel Ryan tied the game 1-1 with an unassisted tally on a low shot through traffic at 7:17.

But Pittsford took control, scoring three goals in a 53 second span and five unanswered to lead 6-1.

With 8:22 left in the first half, senior attack Morgan Hoover broke up the run with a goal on a free-position tally, but the Panthers led 8-2.

It could have been worse, but Hilton goalie Ashley Maynard made 13 saves in the first half with at least six coming on free-possession shots from eight meters or less.

Ryan opened the scoring in the second half to pull the Cadets to 8-3, but Pittsford answered by scoring six of the next seven goals to lead 14-4 with 7:43 remaining.

That’s when the Cadets poured it on.

Sophomore Fran Messura scored twice in a ten second span to start to comeback attempt, Ryan finished her hat trick with a goal at 19:36 and, after a Panther goal with 2:29 left, the Cadets scored the final four goals of the contest.

Elisa Orlowski, Blair Beasley, Brenna Hibbard and Beasley again all netted goals within 58 seconds of each other to bring the Cadets to the final 15-11.

“I told the team after the game that next time we’ll pretend the game starts at 6 p.m., so by seven we’ll be at our peak,” said Hilton head coach Colleen Coles, whose team dropped to 2-6 with wins over Fairport and Brockport.
