Rangers outlast Cadets in volleyball

In a classic Monroe County Division II contest, host Spencerport allowed their two-game-to-none advantage over Hilton disappear before rallying for a 25-20 win in the fifth in the regular season girls volleyball opener for both teams.

The Rangers led game one by as many as eight points late (22-14) led by two kills and two blocks by Christa White during a seven-point sequence, but the Cadets rallied to pull two at 22-20 before the Rangers rallied for the final three in a 25-20 win.

Game two was just as close – tied 21-21 before Rangers senior Jada Carrol took matters into her own hands with a block and three consecutive aces for a 25-21 win.

The Cadets rallied in game three and jumped out to a 10-1 lead led by three aces by Melissa Rudy on their way to a 25-17 win.

Hilton built an eight-point lead in game four, but the Rangers chipped away to eventually tie the game at 20-20 on a kill from Julie Campion and an ace from White. Rudy finally put the game away for the Cadets with a kill in a 25-23 win to send the match the distance.

Spencerport used their late game-four momentum to jump out to a 6-1 lead, including a pair of aces by Sylvia Perez. With the game tied 18-18, the Rangers took advantage of three miscues to rebuild a three-point cushion and were able to finish off the match on a pair of kills by Carrol and an ace by Campion over the final four points.

White led all players with 17 kills, Perez dished out 20 assists and Carrol added ten kills, seven aces and five blocks for the 1-0 Rangers.

Hannah DeLorenzo had 25 assists, 18 digs and eight kills to lead Hilton with Rudy registering nine kills and ten digs and Marielle Buss adding eight kills.
