Hawks win opening tournament
Junior Gabriel Mendoza had one goal and three assists and senior Tyler Chmylak netted two goals to lead Holley to a pair of 3-0 victories against Royalton-Hartland and Newfane respectively to win their season-opening Sports-Boosters Tournament. The first round win avenged their first round loss to Roy-Hart in the same tournament.
Senior Jon Bower began the scoring in the 16th minute of the semi-final converting a pass from Mendoza. Just three minutes later Bower sent a touch pass over the defense that Mendoza chased down and converted for a 2-0 lead.
In the 23rd minute, Mendoza raced down the right side and had his shot go off the goalkeepers’ fingertips before Chmylak gathered up the loose ball in the box and scored to send the Hawks into the final.
Holley netted all three goals in the first half of the title game as well.
Mendoza found Andrew Cary for the first, junior Justin Parker assisted on a Chmylak goal to make it 2-0 and Derek McArthur finished the offense off a pass from Joe DeFelice.
“It was good to get the “W”, head coach Dan Orbaker said. We didn’t play well in the second half (of the first game), but it’s early and the players are still developing chemistry this early in the year.”
Freshman goalkeeper Patrick Bower made two saves in the first game to pick up his first career varsity shutout. He is the ninth boy from the extended Bower family to wear the Hawks uniform under Orbaker behind his older brothers Adam, Aaron and Jonny, and cousins Andrew, Steven, Eddie, Jake and Mike Logsden.
