Redhawks sweep
Roberts Wesleyan’s women’s and men’s soccer teams exploded offensively for a combine ten goals in a doubleheader sweep over St. Thomas Aquinas in East Coast Conference action.
The women built a 3-0 halftime lead as Churchville-Chili grad Ellie Swan headed in a Jackie Corbett feed in the 23rd minute. Former Saint Bella Mitrevski, playing in her first game since mid-September due to a sprained ankle but still leading the team in scoring, netted her fifth goal of the season less than eight minutes later with an assist from Swan.
With less than one minute before halftime, Heaven Palamitia knocked in the rebound of a corner kick attempt after the initial shot was stopped.
In the 71st minute, Laura Herman streaked down the left wing before her attempt rolled along the goal line. Corbett slid and knocked the ball in for her first of the season and the game’s final tally.
Brockport native Marissa Sell and Alyssa Jim split time in goal to split the shutout – the second of the season for the Redhawks.
It marked the fifth win of the season, but first in the conference for 5-5-0 Roberts.
For the men, Stephen Stewart had a pair of goals and one assist to pace the Redhawks to their fifth win.
Roberts netted four goals over an eight minute span in the first half to blow the contest wide open.
Damien Pagano (Churchville-Chili) began the onslaught converting a Stephen Stewart pass with a diving header in the 22nd minute. Stewart and Malcolm Shaw combined for the next two goals, the first catching the goalkeeper out of position as Stewart’s innocent left foot shot found the back of the net. The second came off a long service leading to a two-on-one.
Brother Cameron Stewart scored his second goal of the season on a bullet from 30 yards out set up by Michael Cunningham.
In the second half, Cunningham raced down the left wing and caught the goalkeeper playing the pass for Roberts’ fifth goal and his team-leading seventh in the 66th minute.
Michael McGinnis sent Alex Loete in all alone for his first collegiate goal in the 81st minute to complete the scoring.
Michael Scavone and John Civaglia combined to make five saves in goal for the third shutout of the season.
After long road trips for both teams, the women return home for their final three games beginning with Malone on October 25 while both teams welcome LIU Post for their next-to-last game of the regular season on Halloween night.
