Saints tie #14 Hilton 0-0
Missed opportunities and the goalkeepers were the story as Churchville-Chili and Hilton fought to a 0-0 tie in girls soccer. The Cadets entered the contest ranked 14th in Class AA in the New York State Sportswriters Association poll.
Saints senior Ally Breon had an early scoring chance in the 14th minute as she skirted two defenders along the goal-line before her shot for the near post necessitated a diving stop by Hilton goalkeeper Vanessa L’Abbate.
The Saints just missed again in the 22nd minute as Jessica Hyde’s indirect kick from 40 yards out was headed just wide of the right post by Mara Zimmerman.
Kyndal Hetzel had her shot on goal off a cross stopped by C-C goalkeeper Lainy Ziegler in the 24th minute.
Churchville-Chili opened the second half with Cortney Baird making a double-move on the left goal-line and feeding a pass in front that was missed.
Just one minute later it was the Cadets’ Noelle Shonk putting one just over the crossbar followed in the next minute with Alexandra Cummins being stopped on a point-blank shot by Ziegler.
Cummins headed a Shannon Page pass over the crossbar in the 70th minute before the Saints’ Macaylah Arieno rebound attempt deflect off a defender in the 73rd minute.
Hilton had a corner kick in the final 15 seconds of the second overtime, but could not convert.
Saints goalkeeper Ziegler and Hilton keeper L’Abbate were each credited with seven saves. C-C improved to 6-3-4 while Hilton, who has allowed just one goal against divisional opponents all season, moved to 9-1-3 on the season with each having three games remaining in the regular season.
