Local Cheer Team heading to Disney
In only its seventh year, the Hamlin Hornets Youth Football and Cheerleading Organization have a co-ed Midget Cheer Team heading to Disney World to compete for Pop Warner’s National Championship.
These young men and women range from ages 13 to 15 and come from several communities including Hamlin, Brockport, Clarkson, Hilton and Kendall. In order to attend the National Championship these young athletes need to maintain a certain grade point average in school.
In addition to their schoolwork they also have six hours of practice a week since school started, so they work hard on academics as well as on the mat. They had an amazing score at the local competition that earned them first place and then repeated the regional competition in New Jersey for another first place finish. Now they have their eyes set on National Champions in Orlando, Florida during the week of December 9 through 14.
The cheerleaders and coaching staff have been working very hard on fundraising, before and during the season. They have participated in a Yankee Candle Fundraiser; two “fill the megaphone” campaigns, bake sales and even stood out in front of Brockport WalMart for twelve hours selling candy bars.
Fundraising is still going on, but it appears it won’t be enough to send this team of twenty-two cheerleaders and coaches to Disney. Those who would like to donate can also visit gofundme.com and search A Hornets Dream! to make a donation.
This is a once in a lifetime dream for this group of talented young men and women.
