Bees run away in third
Byron-Bergen outscored visiting Pembroke 11-6 in the third quarter and used their height advantage to lead by as many as 12 points in their 47-40 boys basketball win over the Dragons.
The opening eight minutes saw three lead changes and the score tied on two occasions before Byron-Bergen opened up a five-point lead in the second thanks to a field goal and three-pointer from Steele Truax and a lay-up by Brandon Burke.
The Bees limited the Dragons to just one basket over the first seven minutes of the third quarter and scored 11 of their own during the run, including a trey by Jordan Coffta as they opened up a 34-22 advantage.
Both teams traded baskets for most of the final quarter and the Dragons never got closer than six points from the lead. A trey by Truax with 2:40 remaining put away any hopes of a late comeback.
Nick Magin led the Bees with 16 points and dished out three assists. Truax finished with 14 points, six rebounds and three assists, Burke led with eight rebounds, four blocks and chipped in with seven points. Coffta and Bryan Hallenbeck each added five points to the win.
Byron-Bergen finished the regular season 7-12 and were on the bubble to potentially host a first round Class C playoff game.
