Youth complete gun safety course
Silence prevails as the 7-14 year olds concentrate on the firing line of the Holley Rod & Gun Club’s BB Gun Safety and Marksmanship course. The club and instructor, Sandy Shay (NRA Certified Long Gun Instructor) provide this course to local children, with an opportunity for their parents to sit in, listen and learn. The course consists of lecture training about safety and marksmanship with an interactive opportunity for the students to put their skills to the test on the firing line.
During the six week course, participants met with Senator Robert Ortt and Assemblyman Stephen Hawley at the Holley Rod & Gun Club. Their conversations ranged from the Senator asking a lot of questions about safety, such as, “A gun is only as safe as …” and the kids answering with a resounding “the person handling it!” Other topics included the Bill of Rights and the SAFE Act. The children had a lot of questions for the politicians ranging from firearm licensing to tax questions.
The last day of the course consisted of the Trophy Shoot, where each of the ten participants had the opportunity to shoot two targets and their average determined the placement: First place, Jacob Baron; second place, Koryn Neale; third place, Cole London; with an honorable mention to Kayla Neale, Joshua Henhawk, Emma Shay, Harleigh Andrews, Chuck MacPhee, Juliana Allis and Luminara Virgilio.
