Area athletes are state champions
Hilton wrestlers Yanni Diakomihalis and Louie DePrez each won state titles at the New York State Wrestling Championships at the Albany Times-Union Center while Brockport swimmer Nick Olson brought home a Federation and public schools title at the Swimming and Diving Championships held at Ithaca College.
Diakomihalis won his third consecutive state title winning the final at 120 lb. via fall with just seven seconds remaining on the third period clock. He also won the 106 lb. title in 2014 and the 99 lb. class in 2013.
The sophomore won his first round bout via pin in 3:19, his second round by major decision 9-1 and the semi-final by pin in 1:08 prior to the final.
Teammate DePrez took a 7-3 decision in his 160 final to win his first state title and follow in the footsteps of older brother Vincent, who won the 145 lb. state title one year ago.
DePrez won his first round by pin in 2:38, the second round by a 6-0 decision and the semi-final with a 4-1 decision.
Teammate Austin Hertel won his first two bouts to advance to the 113 lb. semi-final before settling for sixth overall.
Hilton won the state team title with 71 points over second place Minisink Valley.
Brockport’s Cameron Caldarelli finished fourth in the state at 195 lb. winning his first round with a 13-5 major decision before falling in the quarterfinals. He wrestled back to finish fourth.
In swimming, Olson set a new Section V record in winning the 50 freestyle state title in 20.43. He also was second in the 100-yard freestyle finishing .46 seconds behind the winner and was part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team with Nathaniel Bartalo, Brandon Amthor and Joe Williams finishing .29 seconds back.
