Turpyn ties Hilton School record
Junior and third baseman Brent Turpyn drove in a pair of runs – the second on his 12th double of the season tying the school mark held by Jon Schwind from 2007 – and David Stirpe plated two runs with a key two-out hit as Hilton defeated Fairport 8-3 in the Class AA baseball quarterfinals.
The Cadets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the home half of the first inning as Austin Metzger reached on an error, Alex Hendry had a bunt single and, after an out, Turpyn walked to load the bases. After the second out of the inning, Stirpe singled to right to drive in Metzger and Hendry with the game’s first two runs.
Hilton batted around in the second inning and built their lead to 5-0. Brandon Bourg took second on an error and went to third on a bunt single by Justin Resseguie. Metzger walked to again load the bases before Hendry laced a single to left scoring two. He came across on a sacrifice fly by Turpyn.
Fairport countered with single runs in the fourth and sixth, but the Cadets scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Resseguie and Metzger singled with the former later taking third on a fly-out. Metzger then took off for second on a delayed steal with Resseguie breaking for home at the perfect time on the throw to second and scored. Catcher Dom Palma had an RBI single and Turpyn his RBI double to make it 8-2 Cadets.
Fairport plated one run in the seventh off starting pitcher John Chiappone, but Metzger came on to record the final out on two pitches on a foul-out.
Chiappone allowed seven hits and struck out three in throwing 101 pitches over 6.2 innings of work to earn the victory.
The third-seeded Cadets had their season ended with a 10-3 loss to number-two seed McQuaid in the semifinals completing the high school careers of Metzger, Lucas LaJuett, Hendry, Bourg and Matt Butts.
