Seniors Light, Fisher homer for Blue Devils
In a game that featured four lead changes, Brockport senior Taylor Light and Anna Fisher each smashed home runs to spark the top-seeded Blue Devils to a 5-3 victory over Canandaigua and a trip to the Class A1 championship against number two Pittsford-Mendon.
Nerves were obvious early as Light allowed two singles, one walk and threw two wild pitches as Canandaigua took a 1-0 first inning lead.
“I was a little shaky, but that’s how it is sometimes,” Light said.
She finished the first Brockport comeback after Fisher led off the fourth inning with a single as she parked a 2-1 pitch over the left-center field fence for a two-run home run and a 2-1 Blue Devil lead.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment for a really long time and I’m just thankful that I could get it done.”
But that lead didn’t last long as the Braves had a two-out, two-RBI double to retake a 3-2 lead.
Brockport rebounded again in their half of the fifth as Larissa Vandetta led off with a single, went to second on a sacrifice by seventh-grader Erynn Hogan and took third on a bunt single by Brooke Falsion. Fisher then blasted an 0-2 pitch over the wall in straight-away center field for a three-run home run and a 5-3 Blue Devils lead.
Light dominated on the mound over the final two innings retiring all six batters and the final eight in all to secure the win.
“I knew Anna (Fisher, her catcher) and I were going to get it done,” Light said. “I had complete confidence in every sign she put down and was in a zone over the last few innings.”
“When you think about it, we have nine players on the field and only three came into this year with Section V playoff experience,” Brockport head coach Mary Karen Wheat said. “And all of them are at different positions.
“Taylor took over at the end. Even when the “D” made mistakes, she locked it down. She has taken ownership of what she is able to do in the circle.”
