Barnard assists Rangers into postseason
Setter Jarod Barnard dished out 38 assists to lead Spencerport to a three-game sweep over Brockport in the final match of the regular season for both volleyball teams. The Rangers will enter the Section V playoffs seeded either first or second in Class BB and try to win their first crown since 2009.
With a 6-5 lead in game one, Spencerport took control with an 11-3 run highlighted by a pair of kills by Zachary Baxter, an ace from Josh Rabidoux and a kill by Andrew Bertino. Trevor Lane had a kill and John Olmstead an ace to finish off the 25-12 win.
The Rangers never trailed in game two, but saw a four point lead evaporate to an 18-18 tie as Brockport railed behind a block by Zach Sweet and kills by John Bamburoski and Jake Vergari. But Bertino and Michael Dinh registered a kill and an ace on consecutive points to build the lead to 23-18 before Rabidoux finished the 25-21 win with a pair of kills on the final two points.
Game three was tied 10-10 before the Rangers found their offensive rhythm with a 12-3 run as Rabidoux had three kills, one ace and one block in the stretch on their way to a 25-17 win to complete the sweep.
Barnard added three kills to his 38 assists, Rabidoux had a game-high 17 kills with four aces, Bertino added 11 kills and eight digs and Lane had five kills with a pair of blocks for the Rangers.
Bamburoski and Vergari each led Brockport with ten kills while the Blue Devils only senior, Shaye Bartnick, had ten digs with 21 assists. The Blue Devils expected to be a six or seven seed in the playoffs.
