Blue Devils wrap up undefeated division hockey title
Leading scorer Mitchell Henshaw scored twice and added a pair of assists while Andrew Harley had a three-point game to lead Brockport to a 4-0 win over Hilton and clinch the Monroe County Division II hockey regular season title with an undefeated 12-0-2 record.
Henshaw staked the Blue Devils to a 1-0 lead just 1:38 into the contest as he took a pass along the boards from Harley and wristed it from the high slot into the net. Peyton Young also assisted on the play.
Hilton challenged twice in the stanza as Brenden Howell fed Sam Sedia whose backhander was stopped on a sprawling save by Brockport goaltender Riley Emmerson. One minute later John Rutherford hit the post.
The second period was scoreless, but only because Brockport forward Koby Dusett was stopped on a breakaway by Hilton goaltender Patrick Dennehy. Cadets Howell and Frank Gaffney worked a perfect give-and-go later in the period, but Gaffney’s shot clanged off the goalpost.
The Blue Devils doubled their lead just 12 seconds into the third period as the rebound from a Henshaw shot went directly to Harley who found the back of the net.
At 3:45 it was Young who benefited from a rebound scoring after a Harley shot following a pass from a Henshaw pass to extend the lead to 3-0.
Late in the period, Henshaw redirected a Young shot for his team-leading 16th goal of the season for the final tally.
Emmerson made 23 saves in the Brockport net in registering his second shutout of the season.
“To be 12-0-2 and to beat Hilton twice, Greece (Thunder) twice and Irondequoit twice – all tough games, the kids did a good job,” Brockport head coach Greg Stahl said. “The big thing with us is, when we’re not playing a lot of guys, we have to be smarter with how we’re playing d-zone and neutral ice so we’re not chasing as much. When we do get the puck, that’s when we turn it on and use our speed.”
Brockport was seeded third in Class B and was set to play sixth-seed Aquinas in the first round of the Section V playoffs. Hilton, at 10-3-1, was slotted third in Class BB and was to host #6 Penfield in their first playoff round.
