Diakomihalis times two, plus one. That was the magic formula for Hilton as three Cadets – Greg and Yianni Diakomihalis plus Louis DePrez – came home as New York high school wrestling state champions.
Yianni, a junior, won his fourth consecutive state title. This one came at 138 lb. with a 13-5 major decision in the final. He earlier won two matches by technical fall.
Brother Greg, an eighth-grader, kept up the family tradition by winning his first state crown. He defeated the top-seed in the 99 lb. final 7-4.
Teammate Louis DePrez moved up a weight class after winning the state title at 160 lb. in 2015 and romped in a major decision in the 170 lb. final 9-1.
Brockport had two wrestlers finish among the top six in their respective weight classes. Senior Jake Sweet took third at 195 lb. with an 8-6 win in his final match while junior teammate Mike Mattson finished fifth with a 3-1 decision in his final bout at 285 lb.
Spencerport senior Kyle Pittman won his fifth place match 3-2 at 160 lb.
