Blue Devils win on senior day

Brockport overcame 3-0 and 6-5 deficits with three runs in their last two times at bat to defeat Churchville-Chili 10-7 in girls’ softball.

The Saints opened up a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Danielle King reached on a two-base error and Melissa Prewasnicak singled and stole second. Pitcher Deanna Tinch drove both in with a single. Another single by Lizzy Beach and a wild pitch put runners at second and third before Jenna Prewasnicak drove in the third run with a single.

Brockport rebounded with five runs in their half of the first. Erynn Hogan plated Emily Parker with an RBI double and was sent home on a single by Olyvia Zinkiewich, Mara Santos one-hopped the wall on her RBI double and later scored on an error. Mandi Lucas scored on a wild pitch to complete the inning.

Churchville-Chili recaptured the lead in the third as both Tinch and Beach reached on errors. Tinch scored on an RBI single by Jess Ficarella and, after a single by Andrea Giuliano loaded the bases, Jenna Prewasnicak walked to drive in a run. After a pair of force outs, King drove in another run with an infield single.

The Saints made it 7-5 in the fourth as Tinch led off with a single and went to third on a double by Beach. Ficarella drove in Tinch on a groundout.

Brockport tied the game with a pair of runs in their half of the fourth. Parker reached on a bunt single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Hogan sent her home with a single and later scored as Zinkiewich singled and the ball was thrown away as she went to third.

The Blue Devils added a single run in the fifth and two in the sixth. Bri Judd and Jasibel Claudio both singled with Judd later scoring on an error.

In the sixth Santos stroked a one-out single and advanced to second on a groundout. Katie Overmeyer drove in Santos with a single and went to second on the throw. Judd then drove in the last run with a triple.

“We were outscoring 54-4 the first week of the season and most would hang their heads, but this group never quit,” Brockport head coach Mary Karen What said.Brockport finished the season with a 5-14 record and seeded seventh with a first round game against Franklin.

Churchville-Chili was 3-17 and the tenth seed in Class AA. Their season ended with a loss to seventh-seed Hilton in the first round.
