Michael Phelps named Hickok Belt® Award winner for August 2016
American swimmer Michael Phelps has been named the Hickok Belt® Award winner for the month of August 2016. A select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA) conducted the voting. The voters selected Phelps based on his record-setting performance at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio last month.
At the age of 31, Phelps took home five gold medals and a silver in his fifth Olympic competition. His total medal tally currently stands at a record of 28 overall medals, including 23 gold medals, making him the most decorated Olympian in history.
Other finalists for the month of August in order of how the NSMA voters ranked them included: Simone Biles (gymnastics), Usain Bolt (track & field) and Katie Ledecky (swimming).
His selection as the Hickok Belt® Award winner for the month of August 2016 recognizes Michael Phelps as “the best of the best” in professional sports for the month and makes him the eighth candidate eligible to receive the overall Hickok Belt® Award for 2016, joining Serena Williams, LeBron James, Clayton Kershaw, Jake Arrieta, Novak Djokovic, Steph Curry and Jason Day.
