Rangers win first state title
The Spencerport girls’ soccer team trounced Section I champion Pearl River 6-0 in the New York State semi-finals before beating top-ranked Jamesville-DeWitt 2-1 in come-from-behind fashion at SUNY Cortland to bring home the school’s first state title as well as finish #4 in the nation in the final USA Today poll.
The Rangers entered the finals with eight consecutive shutouts, but it was Jamesville-Dewitt who found the net first early in the first half. They started the season on a mission after being upset in the opening round of last season’s Section V tournament as the top seed.
But Spencerport rebounded less than ten minutes later as Leah Wengender found Erin Coykendall for the tying goal.
The Rangers then took a 2-1 lead before the half ran out as Leah Martone crossed to Coykendall, who headed it into the net.
The Rangers finished their nearly perfect campaign with a 21-0-2 record.
The core of the team will return next season, but seven seniors accomplished the rare feat of ending their high school soccer careers with a win including Sarah Honan, co-captain Isabella DiGuardi, Tori Macias, co-captain Chandler Stephany, Brooke Antinoro, Olivia Icobelli and Maliah Benedetto.
