Brockport wins Section V Class B Championships

The Brockport fire trucks and Brockport police met their bus, and the swimmers waved and cheered as they were escorted through town.  They brought it home; the trophy was in their hands; they were sectional champions – Brockport’s first for boys’ swimming.  The Blue Devils accumulated 363.5 points for the overall first place team while winning eight of 12 events swum.

Several Brockport team members received recognition during award ceremonies.  Brandon Amthor was honored as overall Section V Swimmer of the Year along with being voted Swimmer of the Meet. Teammate Bruce Kane received honors as Monroe County’s Division III Swimmer of the Year, and Alex Regna became one of the Sportsmanship Award winners.

With a no loss season and a sectional win, Coach Scott Stepanek was voted Coach of the Year.  Giving credit to the swimmers, Scott remarked, “Our guys knew the significance of this meet and wanted to be the team that brought Brockport their first boys’ sectional swimming title.”

Historically, Brockport has had some outstanding swimmers, but this year the door was open for an all-out team effort, and the boys stepped up.

Event swimmers and divers scoring points from the top sixteen places included: medley relay – first: Kane, Regna, Nick Dambra, Amthor 1:40.48*; 200 freestyle – second:  Matt Dambra 200 IM – first: Amthor 1:53.34* high school record, ninth:  N. Dambra, twelveth: Colby Riexinger; 50 freestyle – first: Kane 22.04*, ninth: Peter Howlett, thirteenth: Rylan Donovan;  diving – first: Anthony Guerrieri 486.35*,  fourth: Dakota Bechtold, twelfth:  Zack Turlington; 100 butterfly – second: Regna, ninth: N. Dambra; 100 freestyle – second: Kane 48.64*, sixteenth: Z. Kime;  500 freestyle – first: Amthor 4:44.73*; 200 freestyle relay – first: M. Dambra, Regna, Howlett, Kane; 100 backstroke – first: M. Dambra, tenth: Riexinger, eleventh: Sheffer; 100 breaststroke – second: Regna, twelfth: Donovan, sixteenth: Howlett; 400 freestyle relay – first: N. Dambra, M. Dambra, Z. Kime, Amthor.

Team members swimming in the preliminary competition included: Albert Soto, Sam Coyle, Logan Kime, Dalton Cunningham, Brendon Grego, Cory Albrecht, and Alex LaMere. The Brockport swim team, coaches, and parents extend their sincere thank you to the Brockport Fire Department and Brockport Police Department for their generous support in making lasting memories.

Swimming in Class B alongside Brockport, the westside Spencerport team took overall fourth place with 235 points. Top five event finishes included Spencerport’s Nolan Benson who took two first place finishes in the 200 freestyle 1:46.02* and the 100 freestyle 47.66*, Jared Kettinger placed first and third in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM respectively, and Andrew Cole placed third with Colin Schultz fourth in the 100 breaststroke.

Spencerport took second place event finishes for both the 200 medley relay – (Zachary Nau, Schultz, Kettinger, Benson) and 200 freestyle relay – (Benson, Cole, Nau, Kettinger).

Swimming in Class A Championships westside schools included Churchville-Chili placing overall fifth place, Hilton sixth place, Greece seventh place, and Gates Chili eleventh place.

Swimmers and divers finishing in top five event places were: medley relay – fourth: Hilton (Joshua Rosario, Matt Buri, Jack DiBitetto, Noah Neale); 200 freestyle – second: Brandon Crist (Churchville-Chili) 1:43.35*; 200 IM – third: Tyler Regelsberger (Churchville-Chili) 1:57.18*; 50 freestyle – second: Christian Montanez (Churchville-Chili) 21.88*; third: Tyler Smith 22.16* (Greece); diving – fourth: Parker Anderson (Gates Chili); 100 freestyle – third: Regelsberger 47.69* (Churchville-Chili), fourth: Montanez 48.37* (Churchville-Chili), fifth: Tyler Smith (Greece); 500 freestyle – first: Crist 4:34.75* (Churchville-Chili); 200 freestyle relay – first: Churchville-Chili 1:28.57* (Montanez, Kyle Wooding, Regelsberger, Crist); 100 breaststroke – second: Matt Buri (Hilton), third: Noah Neale (Hilton); 400 freestyle relay – second: Churchville-Chili 3:15.45* (Regelsberger, Wooding, Crist, Montanez).

*Denotes state meet qualifying swim time or diving  score – NYS Swimming Championships held i n Long Island March 3 and 4.
