Benedetto’s seven-point effort paces Rangers

Senior Maliah Benedetto scored three goals over the first 11:25 of the game and finished with four goals and three assists to lead Spencerport to a 15-2 victory over Churchville-Chili in their Section V girls’ lacrosse quarterfinal contest.

Sophomore Erin Coykendall staked the Rangers to an early 1-0 lead before Benedetto tallied twice – the first on a free possession and the second after a pass from Coykendall – to make it 3-0 just 3:32 into the contest.

After Churchville-Chili junior Maddy Marsh scored after a pass from Nina Orlowski, the Rangers finished the first half with seven unanswered goals.

Monroe Community College commit Benedetto completed her hat trick at 11:25 before Natalie Choate tallied after a pass from Emily Coykendall to extend the Rangers lead to 5-1.

Five more goals by the Rangers over a 3:28 span closed the first half.

Olivia Wall, Choate (from Taylor Goodman) and then three tallies from the sister team of Emily and Erin Coykendall made it 10-1 Rangers at halftime.

Spencerport freshman Paige Pohleven opened the second half with a goal in the first minute with an assist from Benedetto, who tallied an unassisted goal – her fourth of the game – to extend the Rangers lead to 12-1.

Wall and Pohleven each tallied their second goals of the game with Florida Southern University bound Emily Coykendall making it 15-1 late in the second half.

Saints senior Katie Cosgrove scored the final goal of her high school career to complete the scoring with ten seconds remaining in the game.

Rangers’ sophomore goaltender Kiari Rufus made five saves, including several from point-blank range with the sun in her eyes during the first half.

Third seed Spencerport was set to battle second seed Canandaigua in the Section V Class B semi-finals.
