Mercy ends Cadets campaign

Fifth-ranked Mercy jumped out to a 13-0 lead and never looked back as they defeated fourth ranked Hilton 62-37 in the Section V Class AA girl’s basketball quarter-finals.

Meghan Schiano knocked down consecutive treys late in the first quarter to close the early Mercy lead, but the Cadets managed just ten second quarter points—four from senior Alyssa Juergens, four by Megan Letta and a jumper by Katie Annable.

Juergens scored nine of her team-high 17 points in the third quarter along with a put-back from Linzee Reyes and three more points by Schiano, but Mercy extended their lead to 17.

The Cadets offense dried up over the final eight minutes as they got two field goals by Juergens and a three-pointer by Letta for their only scoring.

“They did what we asked them to do and executed perfectly, but we can’t control what shots go in,” Hilton head coach Jeff Eichas said. “Their top players make it tough where if you play down low they hit three’s and if you extend they go inside. They will get their points.”

In addition to Juergens 17 points which gave her 227 this season, Schiano finished with nine and Letta added seven in Eichas’ final game as head coach of the Cadets.

Mercy’s Katie Titus led all scorers with 24 points and Traiva Breedlove added 14.
