Lucas double keys Blue Devils late rally
Senior Madi Lucas stroked a two-out, two-RBI double as Brockport rallied from a 1-0 deficit with four runs in the seventh inning to defeat Churchville-Chili 4-1 in girl’s softball.
The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in their half of the third inning on a Jenna Prewasnicak RBI single to right-center.
Churchville-Chili pitching with sophomore Nicole Collom and junior Anna Wiater and defense kept the Blue Devils offense in check through six innings.
After a 1-2-3 fifth, Brockport got their leadoff batter aboard in the sixth, but Saints catcher Maria Esposito picked the runner off first with a perfect throw.
In the top of the seventh, Brockport senior Larissa VanDetta led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. One out later, freshman Emma Laureano stroked a single to center putting runners at second and third after the throw home.
After a hard line-out to Saints third baseman Sarah Russell, who was playing in for the bunt, for the second out VanDetta scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 1-1.
Senior Brianna Judd singled to center to score Laureano with the go-ahead run and, after an Olyvia Zinkiewich single, Lucas lined her two-out double to left-center to give the Blue Devils a 4-1 cushion.
Brockport improved their record to 5-3 and, with the weather playing havoc with the early-season schedule, will play 11 games over a 15 day-span to complete the regular season.
