Blue Devils start 5-0
Following a first quarter that featured eight lead changes and having the score tied on four other occasions, Brockport took over and cruised to a 51-37 girl’s basketball victory over visiting Greece Athena.
With the Trojans leading 13-12 after the first eight minutes, Brockport amped up the defensive pressure and outscored Athena 14-2 in the second half to take a 26-15 halftime lead. Doralis Allen hit three field goals, Bryn Hayes a lay-up, Emma Sodoma a put-back, Erynn Hogan a pair of free throws and GG Allen on a drive as the Blue Devils received balanced scoring in the quarter.
Brockport outscored the Trojans by five in the third quarter as Allen added nine points to her total while Shinya Lee hit a bank shot and Hogan a trey.
After Athena began the fourth on a 9-2 run to close the Brockport lead to nine, Allen hit a lay-up and Hayes on her drive and secured the win at the free throw line late.
“We didn’t run and get easy baskets in the first half like we usually do,” Brockport head coach Justin Laureano said. “In the second quarter we put pressure on and ratcheted up the “D” a little bit. We’re better when we get out and run.”
Allen led the Blue Devils with 21 points and added five rebounds while Hayes added 11 points, eight assists and five rebounds. Lee had eight rebounds, three blocks and three steals, GG Allen seven rebounds, Emma Laureano eight points and Hogan five points.
Brockport is off to a 5-0 start to their campaign. They last won a league championship in 1996 and a Section V title in 1990.
