McGwin, Reyes combine for 36 points

Senior forwards Meaghan McGwin and Linzee Reyes scored 36 of Hilton’s 60 points as they easily defeated Gates-Chili by 14 points in girls basketball.

The Cadets used unselfish passing throughout to beat the zone defense and jumped out to a 21-8 first quarter lead as senior point guard Megan Letta scored all nine of her points on three treys and McGwin scored five points.

“You try to get the defense moving one way and reverse direction; you just need to do it quickly and we did tonight,” first year Hilton head coach Kurt Graupman said.

The Cadets held an 11-point lead at halftime after an evenly played second quarter, but used a 13-3 run over the first four minutes of the second half as Reyes hit a lay-up and three-pointer on consecutive possessions and McGwin knocked down back-to-back jumpers to stake themselves to a 21-point advantage. Senior Meghan Schiano also had a field goal and senior Katie Annable converted off her steal during the spurt.

The Cadets managed just ten points of offense in the final quarter as they struggled a bit with the full court press of the Spartans, but their lead held up in the 60-46 victory.

McGwin led all scorers with 19 points while Reyes finished with 17 points, six rebounds and three steals. Letta added three rebounds and five assists to her nine points, Schiano had seven points, five rebounds and three assists while Sydney Carpenter and Annable each added four points as the Cadets earned their seventh win of the season.
