Rangers wrestlers back among state elite
Ranked eighth among New York State large schools as of January 10, Spencerport got falls from Dominic Vinci, Mike LoPresti, Carlos Vargas and Dexter Craig to defeat Brockport 52-11 to end a three-match losing streak to the Blue Devils.
Vinci pinned his 106 lb. opponent in 1:35 while LoPresti took only :31 to register his pin at 132 lb. Vargas (160 lb.) and Craig (170 lb.) finished the match with falls in 1:35 and 1:05 respectively.
Jake Aina, wrestling up one weight class, was one-point behind when he was taken down with 21 seconds remaining in his 182 lb. bout, but an escape and a take-down at the buzzer helped him emerge with a 7-5 win to start the match.
Silas Egenlauf followed with a second period take-down and a third period reverse in his 4-1 victory at 195 lb.
Mike Nunna scored five points over the first two minutes and made it stand up in his 5-1 win at 285 lb. before Sean Cullen won a tidy 5-0 decision at 99 lb.
Ranger Seth Russo (113 lb.) registered a 3-2 decision on a second period escape, Jason Zimmerman scored all of his points in the first period in his 4-1 decision at 138 lb. and Mason Wersinger (145 lb.) was dominant in a 10-1 major decision.
Brockport’s bright spots were a 19-2 technical fall by Jake Davies at 126 lb., a 6-3 decision by Thomas Doty at 220 lb. and Ryan Doty’s 6-1 win at 120 lb.
