Greater Rochester youth rowing program forming
The Genesee Waterways Center is forming a rowing program for youth in grades six through 12 from anywhere in the region. Greater Rochester Youth Rowing has evolved from 20 years of experience with local rowing, and is fully prepared with coaches, managers, boats, docks and a boathouse. Program coaches and rowers appreciate the venue offered by the Genesee River and Erie Canal and the camaraderie and fitness that comes from rowing, and want to share these benefits with any and all youth. No experience is necessary, as coaches will train participants in the techniques of rowing. Nor is athleticism required – there is no need to run fast, jump high or throw hard. In fact, many of the best rowers propel their boat by precision, not muscle. This is a sport of teamwork, and in a rowing shell, everyone is equal.
Informational meetings for parents and youth will be held at the Waterways Center in Genesee Valley Park, 149 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester, on July 18 and August 15, each beginning at 7:30 p.m.
