BHS alumni continues slam-dunk career in the NBA
Nearly 30-years after graduating from Brockport High School, alumni Jeff Van Gundy is continuing to make a name for himself in the National Basketball League.
Recently Van Gundy led the Los Angeles Select Team, mostly made up of FIBA, the International Basketball Federation, World Cup qualifiers, to victory over the USA Men’s national basketball team twice in one day. The scrimmage was meant to be a warm up for Team USA as they head into an exhibition against Spain.
Prior to coaching the Select Team, Van Gundy has been the head coach of the New York Knicks and the Houston Rockets. He is also a commentator for ESPN.
Van Gundy is a 1980 graduate of Brockport High School. During his time at BHS he played as a point guard and was a two-time All Greater Rochester selection in 1979 and 1980, leading Brockport Central to the Class AA finals. Van Gundy’s name lives on at BCSD on a plaque on the athletic Wall of Honor outside the Oliver Middle School gymnasium.
After graduating from Brockport, he continued his basketball playing career at Nazareth College, where he earned All-American honors, while leading the Golden Flyers to an NCAA Division III Tournament in 1984.
