Amesbury, Tardy help Bees open with victory

Senior Julianna Amesbury scored 14 of her team-high 21 points in the second half while classmate Miriam Tardy tallied all but six of her 15 points over the first 16 minutes to lead Byron-Bergen to a season-opening 43-23 win over visiting Holley in girls basketball.

The Bees led just 9-4 after a lackluster first quarter, but opened up a 12-point half-time lead as Tardy and Amesbury combined for 12 of their 14 points with sophomore Emma Van Valkenburg the other bucket on a jump shot.

Byron-Bergen outscored Holley 17-8 in the third quarter as Amesbury had 13 points including two treys and senior Siomara Caballero added a late field goal.

The two teams combined for seven points total in the fourth.

“We ended up starting two freshmen tonight who would normally be starting with JV because our point guard is out and we just got one other player back who played a little bit tonight,” Bees head coach Rick Krzewinski said.

“We did a lot of things we wanted to do. I thought the defense worked well. For the first game, definitely pleased.”

Amesbury added six rebounds and five steals to her 21 points while Tardy had two steals, two rebounds and one block for the Bees. Val Valkenburg finished with four points; Caballero added three steals as did freshman Ava Wagoner, while freshman MacKenzie Senf chipped in with four boards.

Holley junior Halee Passerell led the Hawks with 11 points, nine rebounds and one steal, senior Olivia Radford had six points, senior Jade Hofforth added four points, while freshmen Tia Hofforth hauled down six rebounds with two steals and one block.
