Brockport starts 5-0, ranked 14th in state
Brockport doesn’t have a single senior in the starting line-up, but trounced previously undefeated Webster-Thomas 68-44 to start the 2019-20 season with a 5-0 record. They are ranked 14th among Class A schools in the first New York State Sportswriters Association rankings released December 17.
The Blue Devils ran out to a 14-0 lead as sophomore Ella Fadale and junior Emma Laureano both hit a pair of treys and junior Emily Vergari added a baseline jumper.
Junior Gisela Allen added two three-pointers – Brockport hit six in the first quarter alone – and added a lay-up as they built a 26-12 first quarter advantage.
Fadale knocked down three field goals and three free throws while freshman Ava Velletri came off the bench to score on three consecutive possessions in the second quarter to help the Blue Devils to a 42-22 halftime lead.
Brockport outscored Thomas 15-7 in the third quarter with Vergari ending the stanza with a put-back and jumper.
Senior Erynn Hogan hit a trey and sophomore Nina Danno a lay-up in the final quarter for the Blue Devils.
“It felt really great knowing that we’re coming off being 4-0 and knowing we can come out strong after only beating them by two, I knew it was going to be a tough game and we had to play all the way through,” Fadale said. “It kind of gives us something in our mind that we can go far this year.
“We have a lot of really good athletes on the team this year; everyone can score any time in the game and we all contribute evenly.”
“We have athletes and we knew we could speed them up and make them uncomfortable and get into our kind of game plan where we are running and getting easy buckets, so I was proud of the girls for executing in the first half like we did,” Brockport head coach Justin Laureano said.
Brockport had three players scoring in double-digits led by Fadale’s 19 to go with four steals. Allen scored 12 points with nine rebounds while Velletri added ten points and Laureano eight. Sophomore Emma Sodoma hauled in seven boards and chipped in three steals with her seven points.
