Saints grapplers win on senior night
Churchville-Chili used pins by Cael Raines and Coy Rainer along with four forfeits and two other decisions to defeat Brighton 42-30 in high school wrestling. Youth wrestling programs in the district along with approximately 15 Saints wrestling alumni dating back as far as the mid-1960s were introduced and honored prior to the match held in the Performing Arts Center.
Eighth-grader Cael Raines registered a second-period fall in 3:31 at 106 lb. and classmate Coy Raines followed suit one weight class later at 113 lb. in 4:49.
Junior Lucas Preston (220), senior Nick Williams (120), sophomore Alejandro Lisboa (160), and Jacob Delaney (195) were all awarded forfeits.
Sophomore Jon Jeffers had a first period takedown and second period reverse to lead 4-2 after four minutes before an escape, takedown, and near fall gave him a 9-2 decision at 145 lb.
And after a scoreless first period, Jeff Morgan had a near fall in the second and a takedown in the third along with escapes in both periods to take his 170 lb. bout 9-5.
“This is our second year (at the Performing Arts Center) and it’s something we want to try to continue and we appreciate the support from the school district,” Saints head coach Justin Raines said.
“We started out with 33 (wrestlers) on the team and now we’re at 31, so it’s one of our largest rosters in the six years I’ve been coaching so things are starting to turn for the positive for us.”
