Professional golfer Phil Mickelson has been named the Hickok Belt® Award winner for May 2021. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA). The voters selected Phil Mickelson for his winning performance in the May 23, 2021 PGA Championship at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina. Capturing his sixth major, at the age of 50, he became the tenth player to win a major title in three decades, finishing at 6- under 282, besting the field by two strokes. He is the oldest play in the history of professional golf to win a major. This major golf tournament was Phil Mickelson’s 44th official career win on the PGA Tour. Phil Mickelson’s incredible sixth career victory is one for the record books and for the ages.
Other finalists for the month of May in order of how the NSMA ranked them included: Helio Castroneves (auto racing), Simone Biles (gymnastics), Kevin Gausman (baseball), Kevin Durant (basketball), Nick Castellanos (baseball), Rafael Nadal (tennis), Connor Hellebuyck (hockey), Nathan MacKinnon (hockey,) and Liam Hendriks (baseball).
His selection as the Hickok Belt® Award winner May 2021 recognizes Phil Mickelson as “the best of the best” in professional sports for the month and makes him the fifth candidate to receive the overall Hickok Belt® Award for 2021, joining Hideki Matsuyama, Luka Doncic, Naomi Osaka, and Patrick Mahomes. Winners as selected by the NSMA will be announced each month throughout 2021.
The Hickok Belt® Award was originally presented annually from 1950 to 1976. Past recipients include a list of the 20th century’s elite athletes including the likes of Muhammad Ali, Arnold Palmer, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Jim Brown and others who defined their sports.
