Olympic gold medal-winning aerial skier Chris Lillis will receive the Local Athlete of the Year Award at the Rochester Press-Radio Club’s Celebration of Champions, presented by ESL Federal Credit Union, at the Rochester Red Wings game at Frontier Field on June 1. The Pittsford native won gold in the mixed team aerial competition at the recently completed Winter Olympics in Beijing.
In addition to Lillis, 11 other local sports figures will be honored. They are:
•Major Donald Holleder Lifetime Achievement Award – Nationally recognized coach and official George Steitz.
•Charlie Wagner & Christine Wagner Welch Founder Award – Irondequoit High School boys basketball coach Chris Cardon.
•Elliot Cushing Award – Rochester Institute of Technology men’s lacrosse coach Jake Coon.
•ESL Press-Radio Coach of the Year – Pittsford-Mendon High School girls basketball coach Todd Julien.
•Gary Smith & George Beahon Sports Media Award –Jenna Cottrell, WHAM-TV sports reporter.
•Jean Giambrone Woman Sports Award – Victor High School volleyball and softball coach Shelly Collins.
•Morrie Silver Award – Chris Woodworth, Bill Gray’s Iceplex Director.
•Jerry Flynn Female College Award – Lindsey Brinkel, Roberts Wesleyan College lacrosse.
•Rich Funke Jr. College Male Award – Ryan Romeo, SUNY Brockport ice hockey.
•Press-Radio Female High School Award – Candace Tytler, Irondequoit High School indoor and outdoor track and cross country.
•Press-Radio Male High School Award – Daley Fraser, Pittsford Mendon High School swim and diving team.
