Rory McIlroy named August 2022 Hickok Belt® Award Winner
Professional golfer Rory McIlroy has been named the Hickok Belt® Award winner for August 2022. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA). McIlroy made history on August 28, 2022, with his third PGA Tour Championship FedEx Cup victory and took home the $18 million in prize money that came with it. At the start of the final round, the 33 year old edged runners-up Scottie Scheffler and Im Sung-jae by one stroke. Rory McIlroy is the first pro golfer ever to win three FedEx trophies.
Other finalists for August in order of how the NSMA voters ranked them were: Zac Gallen (baseball) and Ashley Buhai (golf) – tie, Nelson Arenado (baseball), Brody Malone (gymnastics), Simona Halep (tennis), Kyle Larson (auto racing), Max Verstappen (auto racing), Epicenter – jockey, Joel Rosario (horse racing), and Teofimo Lopez (boxing).
McIlroy’s selection as the Hickok Belt® Award winner for August 2022 recognizes him as “the best of the best” in professional sports for the month. It also makes him the seventh candidate eligible to receive the overall award for 2022, joining Novak Djokovic, Steph Curry, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Cooper Kupp, and other finalists throughout the year based on NSMA voting.
