Tennis star Carlos Alcaraz wins July 2023 Hickok Belt® Award
Men’s tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has been named the Hickok Belt® Award winner for July 2023. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA). The voters selected the 20-year-old tennis phenom Carlos Alcaraz based on his performance in winning the Wimbledon title for the first time in a tense match over Novak Djokovic, in the final 1-6 7-6 6-1 3-6 6-4. In all, Alcaraz has won 12 singles titles, including four ATP Masters 1000, the 2022 US Open and the 2023 Wimbledon title. He is ranked world No. 1 in the ATP singles rankings.
Other finalists for July in order of how the NSMA ranked them included: Shohei Ohtani (baseball), Katie Ledecky (swimming), Joan Vingegaar (cycling) and Brian Harman (golf) – tie, Marketa Vondousova (tennis), Lionel Messi (soccer), Max Verstappen (auto racing), Corbin Burnes (baseball), and Denny Hamlin (auto racing).
Alcaraz’s selection as the Hickok Belt® Award winner for the month of July recognizes him as “the best of the best” in professional sports for the month, and makes him the fifth candidate eligible to receive the 2023 overall award, joining Nikola Jovic, Jon Rahm, Mikaela Shiffrin, Damian Lillard and other finalists throughout the year based on NSMA voting.
