Gratitude to the Town of Greece for Prioritizing Public Health

Subject: Gratitude to the Town of Greece for Prioritizing Public Health
Dear Editor,
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Town of Greece for taking a significant step toward protecting the health and well-being of its residents, particularly our youth, by adopting a tobacco retailer zoning policy.

This policy demonstrates a commitment to safeguarding our community from the harmful effects of tobacco and ensuring that young people are less likely to be exposed to its influence. By limiting the proximity of tobacco retailers to schools and other youth-centered spaces, as well as distance between other retailers, the Town of Greece is sending a powerful message: our children’s health matters, and we are dedicated to fostering an environment that prioritizes their future.

Tobacco use remains one of the leading causes of preventable disease and death. Preventing exposure and access to tobacco products is a proven method to reduce the likelihood of young people starting this harmful habit. This proactive approach by the town leaders reflects a vision for a healthier and more vibrant community for generations to come.

Thank you, Town of Greece, for your thoughtful and impactful decision.
Sincerely,
Hannah Lee, Director of The Smoking and Health Action Coalition of Livingston and Monroe Counties
