Pesticides on Lawns
I recently got a notice that someone in our neighborhood hired a company to apply pesticides to their lawn. As the mother of two children and two dogs who are outside playing all summer long, it is really concerning that people continue to do this. These pesticides (whether applied professionally or with a product you pick up at the store) meant to kill weeds and insects contain known carcinogenics, neurotoxins, and endocrine disruptors. Unfortunately they do not stay neatly in the boundaries of your yard, but run off into the water supply and seep into neighboring yards. They are toxic to children, pets, and wildlife. There are natural ways to control weeds and insects if a spotless lawn is a high priority, but I would also suggest that having dandelions on your lawn is actually a good thing! I understand that many people have made this pesticide application a part of their spring routine for years, but please reconsider and stop putting your neighbors and our environment at risk.
