Community member and Spencerport School Board Trustee

I recently posted the following on a social media platform. As a rule, I generally do not do this kind of post on because I prefer to stay on the positive side of life and limit my use of social media to, well, being social. But I am going to do this for the kids and families I serve as a member of our school board. Please don’t read any further if you are going to feel the need to attack my position here…or get tired easily. 🙂

The amount of vitriol and misinformation being directed at and about the current board and administration of our district is too much to ignore. I have been saddened and disheartened at times, called names, told I (we) cannot lead, I don’t know what I (we) am doing, told I am weak, etc. By people that don’t even know me and have no idea what a school board member can – and cannot – do. All because we would not just flip a magic switch and put all of our kids back in school five days a week.

Would not? No, could not. But why let facts get in the way of going down the path of being divisive. Fact: We cannot just “ignore the guidelines” on bringing back kids into our schools. We are bound by our oath of office, as is the superintendent, to uphold the Constitutions of the U.S. and N. Y. State – which means following legal directives and regulations from the state and federal governments. To do otherwise puts our kids, staff, and community at great risk and on a very basic level, we will lose insurance coverage and funding. And in the event that God forbid, something bad happens to one of our kids or staff, the community pays the price.

If I answered each and every piece of false information that has been out there as “fact,” this post would be a dissertation…more so than it already is. Suffice to say that anyone who knows me – or any of the current board members – knows that my focus/platform and that of the other members has always been and remains, number one, what is best for the kids. And having kids in school is what is best for kids. That is what our fantastic administration, teachers, and staff continue to work towards.

So I would ask, for the good of our district, our community, but mostly, for our kids, please vote on May 18. There are three excellent candidates running for the two seats – Leah Brown, Kevin Hutton, and Mike Mayer. These three attended the district-sponsored Meet the Candidates Night. You can view and listen to their answers to the questions submitted by community members on the District website in order to make an informed decision. All three of these outstanding residents will do what is best for our kids, which is keeping the focus on continuing to improve the Spencerport Central School District. Thank you.
