Gillett Road bridge over Erie Canal in Ogden now restricted to eight tons
The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) announced November 7 that the Gillett Road bridge over the Erie Canal in the Town of Ogden is now restricted to vehicles weighing eight ton or less. The structure had been posted at 20 tons. An empty single unit vehicle (2 axles/6 tires) typically weighs six tons, according to the NYSDOT.
The posting was put in place following a recent inspection and engineering analysis that revealed the bridge can no longer safely carry heavier traffic in its current condition, according to a press release.
The duration of the weight restriction is not yet known. An assessment and plan will be developed, DOT representatives said.
