Opinion & Comments: Sweden Voters to Decide Whether Tax Receiver Is Appointed or Elected

I have been employed by the Town of Sweden for over 20 years, starting as tax receiver and then being appointed Deputy Town Clerk. Just a year ago, when the previous Tax Receiver resigned, I was appointed to that position while also continuing my duties as Deputy Town Clerk. From this experience, I saw many benefits of combining these offices. This approach has made services more convenient for taxpayers by providing longer hours and availability, greater continuity, improved communication, and better use of existing staff and resources.
Tax collection is a specialized municipal function that requires accuracy, accountability, and attention to detail. Appointment of the Tax Receiver by the Town Board would allow them to select an individual based on the qualifications, experience, knowledge, and skills needed to perform this important responsibility.
I have enjoyed working with the Town of Sweden and Village of Brockport residents over the past 20+ years, and it is important to me that the Town Clerk and Tax Receiver offices continue to function in the most efficient way.
I believe that changing the Tax Receiver position from an elected office to an appointedposition would be a responsible step for the future and in the best interests of our taxpayers and community. The Tax Receiver is appointed in 16 of the 19 towns in Monroe County.
You will have the option to vote for this on election day. For clarification, my name will appear on the ballot as required by law.
I encourage all Town of Sweden and Village of Brockport residents to vote on the referendum on November 3, 2026. There is also early voting from October 24through November 1, 2026.
Kathy Roberts, Tax Receiver
Town of Sweden
