Springdale Farm’s Ricky the Pig known as a gentle giant

Springdale Farm has lost one if its icons. Ricky the Pig’s health had been declining for a few months, and he passed away August 19. He was 9.

Ricky was the runt of a litter of 13 Poland China pigs. Because he was the runt, staff at Springdale Farm paid a little extra attention to him. Not only did they feed him separately, but they also put him on a leash and took him for daily walks. Ricky quickly outgrew his leash and eventually weighed close to 800 pounds. He became known as the gentle giant because he would let staff lay down by his side and rub his belly. His sweet, playful personality won the hearts of many.

Ricky loved his mud hole and would often shake off the mud – all over guests. He will be missed by staff and guests.

Springdale Farm has a farm mascot – a pig – who they named after Ricky. The Ricky the Pig mascot can be seen at farm events, as well as throughout the community.

Springdale Farm, part of the Northampton Park, is operated by Heritage Christian Services and owned by Monroe County. It serves as a day program site for adults with developmental disabilities, who care for the plants and animals, maintain the farm grounds and welcome visitors.
