Honoring Military Children

Rochester Event April 12

The New York State Department of Veterans’ Services (DVS) will host Month of the Military Child events across New York State throughout April, featuring a series of free, family-friendly experiences honoring the children of Military Families and Veteran Families.

The Rochester area event will be held on Sunday, April 12, beginning at 10 a.m. at The Strong National Museum of Play, One Manhattan Square, Rochester. Attendees can enjoy a full day of interactive fun, including Adventureland, Sesame Street exhibits, the National Toy Hall of Fame, and more. Lunch will be provided. The event is co-sponsored by Compeer CORPS. Registration is required, and limited space remains available. Military Families may contact DVS Deputy Counsel Benjamin Pomerance at Benjamin.pomerance@veterans.ny.gov to make reservations or join a waitlist in the event of cancellations. When registering, please include the total number of attendees, along with how many are children and how many are adults.

Each participating military child will receive a commemorative Month of the Military Child T-shirt and an official proclamation signed by Governor Kathy Hochul recognizing their contributions.

Observed annually in April, the Month of the Military Child recognizes the strength, service, and resilience of children whose parents serve or have served in the United States Armed Forces. Military children often move six to nine times before graduating high school, which is approximately three times more often than their civilian peers, demonstrating extraordinary adaptability and resilience at a young age.

“Military children serve in their own way—through resilience, adaptability, and quiet sacrifice,” said Pomerance. “This month is about recognizing their strength, honoring their experiences, and ensuring they know they are supported here in New York.”
